I began printmaking as a way to work on an art form that is much more tactile than my work as a playwright and director, and to reconnect with crafts I had experimented with as a child. I immediately found myself drawn to the puzzle of printmaking in thinking through the reversing of an image and negative space. In my printmaking, I find myself interested in two styles of imagery: nature imagery/pattern work and comical vignettes. As a child of Indian immigrants, I grew up surrounded by traditional Indian arts, like henna and kolams, infusing my daily life. In my prints, I am curious to explore those traditional motifs and linework in a different medium, giving them their own spin. Outside of printmaking, I’m a theatre director, writer, and producer. With that background, I’m always delighted by the notion of creating little scenes with prints, and how two prints can be in conversation with one another.
